Shelter and Non-Food Items play a major role working at scale in humanitarian and early recovery operations in the complex context of Somalia both in conflict and natural disasters. IOM is an operational agency working in close coordination with the Shelter Cluster and its partners.
IOM’s Shelter and Non-Food Items overall objectives are (1) to be people-centred and context driven to ensure assistance provided meets the needs of affected population, and (2) support sectoral learning through identification and sharing best practices in close coordination with partners and communities.
The shelter/NFI activities undertaken range from:
- In-kind or Cash Assistance to affected families in distress to support needs of non-food-items
- Emergency, Transitional and Permanent Shelter support through owner driven approaches using cash and in-kind assistance and build on environment friendly local design concepts
- Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction with communities at risk through capacity building and better linkages to existing structures
