World Humanitarian Day 2024: IOM Somalia Chief of Mission Statement

IOM Somalia Chief of Mission Frantz Celestin during a site visit at the Kalamashorto Information Centre in Banadir.

Every year, on August 19th, we observe World Humanitarian Day by reflecting on our work and our commitment to helping communities in need.

Last year was one of the deadliest years on record for humanitarian workers, and 2024 is on course to be even worse — but our resolve is unwavering.

Each of us is driven by a deep personal dedication to humanitarian work. My own commitment was shaped by a lesson my mother taught me at a young age: even one person in distress is one too many. She instilled in me the value of offering a hand up rather than a handout, and of empowering others to chart their own course.

This philosophy has guided my work as a humanitarian across various countries, most recently in Somalia. It has allowed me to stand with those displaced from their homes by circumstances beyond their control, advocate for their rights, and support their transition from vulnerability to resilience.

Building resilient communities is essential if we are to challenge the normalization of violence against civilians and humanitarian workers. This belief drives our work in Somalia, where our focus is on empowering communities not just to survive but to thrive in the face of adversity.

In Somalia, we work closely with Federal Government authorities to build resilience and adapt to the dual challenges of climate change and conflict. Through community stabilization, social cohesion, and environmental peacebuilding programmes, we strive to develop sustainable solutions to the issues of displacement and the violent climate change-conflict cycle.

Being a humanitarian means giving back, supporting the most vulnerable, and witnessing the strength of the human spirit as individuals regain their footing. Our goal is to reduce dependence on aid by empowering communities to become strong and self-sufficient.

On this World Humanitarian Day, we renew our commitment to the values that define our work. We will continue to act for humanity, challenge the injustices that endanger civilians and humanitarians, and work tirelessly until our goals are achieved.
